Forward Festival SG
2023
Spatial Design / Interaction Design / Stakeholder Interview
In Essense:
An extensive event to engage with Singaporeans with the reveal of the details of Forward SG. On top of a grand weekend reveal at in Gardens by the Bay, the installation were designed to be modular to be moved around Singapore.
Navigating a fog of needs
One of the trickiest project, it required working with MCI (now MDDI) with lots of moving parts. Finalising official communications, location scouting, short film production, and even the event’s branding that had to be aligned with official communications.
Yeah, there were a lot of meetings and feedback to keep track of. But it was a strong learning opportunity to be a holistic designer, and not just start only when the brief is in.
Best way to illustrate out the whole project was using an experience map that included all parts of the project to help envision how everything flows and work with one another.
Creating a framework for how the space would work
Having a clear plan based on the requirements of the space and how people will be interacting with it was the first step.
This helps organise and envision information, pacing of information, and how we can effectively use fringe activities to draw crowds in. Kind of like how a very first draft of a space would be.
What came to life
Spatial Planning
Spatial Planning
Using the framework that was developed, it is mapped against the actual physical space. Of course, this needs to be adapted with physical limitations and considerations from the contractors.

Informational Walls
Informational Walls
Being the main bulk of the event space, these walls had to convey the upcoming changes and efforts that Singapore would be aim for the future. Though it maybe a dry topic to some, we had to think about how to make it understandable effectively to all Singaporeans.

Technical Mock-up to help ensure that content are placed in a comfortable position for all reading heights.
Creating Rani
Creating Rani
We wanted to create a personal identity for the festival, so we designed Rani. A virtual avatar that exists throughout digital interactions of the event, from giving selfie nudges and educational breakdown for people.
UI Screens of Rani that lets people take selfies with her, with messaging from the report.
Physical build of the booth while testing Rani for launch, making use of a game engine to produce.
Our Shared Future
Our Shared Future
Another fringe activity in the space was to create an interaction for people to envision themselves in a future Singapore. Keeping in line with the report, the world is created to visually represent key content, and for people to create avatars to populate the world.
Using a game engine to create the environment for avatars to be populated
Roving Locations
Roving Locations
With the initial thinking of having a modular build of the event, this allows us to be able to deploy the same structures in different locations. While applying the spatial framework to do adjustments.
The exact same build were reused in multiple locations across Singapore.
